The sprawling house known as Sandringham was built in the 18th century, but was greatly enlarged in the 1860s when the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, bought it for his country home. The property now belongs to Her Majesty The Queen and the royal family use it for two weeks in summer and at other seasons, usually spending Christmas and the New Year holiday here. The state rooms contain numerous royal mementoes and treasures, and historic royal car shows are held in the garage. There are many pleasant walks through the extensive grounds.

Sandringham House sits at the heart of a 7,000 acre estate and country park, much of which is accessible to the public throughout the year. Parts of the house itself are also open to the public from around late March until the end of October.
